CASE ARENA / PUBLIC ARGUMENT

Genre is a musical argument, not a pedigree test

An artist's roots can enrich context, but they shouldn't become a gatekeeping credential. Awards should weigh the recording's sound, structure, instrumentation, and cultural lineage—not whether the artist stayed inside one marketing category. History matters, especially when genres have contested boundaries, but it should broaden the analysis rather than veto participation. If the work engages the genre seriously, judge the work. Where should institutions draw the line between genre standards and identity policing?
